With the end of the communist era in 1990, Bulgaria begun to adjust to the Western democratic countries.
The change has not merely affected the country´s political and economical system but even more profoundly its people.
Making ones living has become harder, the unemployment rate has increased. The gap between the poor and the rich is huge.
In a country fighting major corruption and social injustice I often find myself drawn to people who have withstood the onslaught of modernization be it at their own volition or not.
Many of them are struggling to secure their living.
The documentation of people in Bulgaria is an ongoing project. I started taking photographs for it in 2004. My roots are partly based there.
